Professor Julia Maclean has held the senior Surgery and Oncology Speech Pathology position at St George Hospital since 1997, following her graduation from the University of Sydney in 1993. She completed a Master of Science in Medicine in 1999 and a PhD in 2010.
As a clinician-researcher, Julia has held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with the St George Swallow Centre, with a particular focus on understanding and improving swallowing outcomes following cancer treatment. She also holds an international academic role as a lecturer in the Master of Deglutology program at KU Leuven, Belgium.
Julia is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has extensive experience in clinical, research and professional governance. She served on the Board of the Australian and New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Society for ten years, including as President from 2017–2019. Since 2019, she has also served on the Southern Cancer Care Board and the Research Committee of the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation.
Her clinical and research career is driven by a commitment to improving the lives of people affected by cancer, with a particular focus on reducing treatment-related toxicities, optimising function and quality of life, and translating research into better patient care.
