The day starts off quietly, everyone in the room has some personal experience with cancer either as a patient or caring for someone they care about experience cancer. It is a powerful room to be in. Becky weaves her magic through the day. At the end the room has been filled with laughter, shared experiences, some tears and beautiful art. There seems to be a lightening of the load. Some of the images that have been created have surprised the artists who have made them.
Some comments from the day –
“Wanted to say thank you for putting on the Art Therapy Workshop on Friday at Hazelhurst Art Gallery. The workshop with Becky Louise was so good, enabling me to take away things I can do myself at home. I tried things I would never have tried on my own – for example single continuous line drawing “.
“The atmosphere was supportive, giving and encompassing, where people felt safe to share about their cancer journey, whether as the person who had it or the loved one. Everyone there added to the day, led by Becky and her own story sharing”.
“Thank you to those who organised this, provided sponsorship, made sure we ate well, had lots of art materials and ran the day. Much love and appreciation to Becky from the bottom of my heart”.
“Thank you for making this all possible”.
Here at Southern Cancer Care we are committed to collaborating with our community to continue the conversation about how we can better assist our patients and their carers. We want to understand what they find helpful. It seems we have hit on something useful for those that have attended the Art Therapy Sessions.
We would also like to thank our sponsors for the day Tynan Motor Group and Sutherland Shire Council, Hazelhurst Gallery.
