A much loved colleague of St George Cancer services was remembered on the first anniversary of her death in November. Christina Brock AM was pivotal in Australia for developing psychological care for young adults with cancer. She was a founding member of CanYA a support group for young adults with cancer and their families. Christina cared for all with great professionalism and grace. Christina was the clinical psychologist in the Cancer Care Centre and positively influenced so many patients during her time with us.
To the many colleagues who worked with Christina her gentle manner, wise words, kindness and compassionate care will always be remembered.
To honour Christina, recognise all her achievements and mourn her untimely death, a metal Lyrebird installation has been placed in the garden of the Cancer Care Centre. The lyrebird can be viewed from the treatment spaces within the Cancer Care Centre. It is a reminder of Christina’s calm presence.
We were fortunate to cross paths with Murray Hey, Director of Metalbird Australia, who crafted our beautiful Lyrebird. On hearing the purpose of our Lyrebird, to honour Christina, Murray gifted the Lyrebird to our garden and an additional one for Christina’s husband Peter. Murray was phenomenally generous and patient as he worked with us to modify the lyrebird to ensure that it could be placed in our garden securely. We are so grateful to all at MetalBird who helped us to achieve the perfect way to remember Christina and to continue her gift to all of the future patients in the Cancer Care Centre.
If you have the chance, take a stroll into the Cancer Care garden, and you will find Christina’s Lyrebird calmly nestled amongst the plants. Stop and enjoy your surroundings, take a deep breath and smile; Christina would like that.
