Rolling the dice with cancer: A night of art, reflection and support for carers

25 Oct 2024

On Friday, 18 October 2024, more than 150 people gathered at The Cottage, Hazelhurst Art Centre, for an unforgettable evening celebrating Carers Week and the opening of Southern Cancer Care’s art exhibition, Rolling the dice with cancer.

This powerful event was made possible with the support of Tynan Motors, Sutherland Shire Council, Hazelhurst Arts Centre and Tradies Gymea.

Maz Farrelly of Maz Speaks Global, masterfully hosted the evening and guided a heartfelt interview with featured artist, Becky Louise. Becky shared her moving journey, documenting her late partner’s battle with cancer through a series of deeply personal artworks.

After the interview, attendees were invited to explore the exhibition, connect with other carers and survivors, and offer feedback on how Southern Cancer Care could continue enhancing resources for cancer carers. The community was treated to Hazel’s incredible catering, adding to the warmth and connection of the night. Not even a heavy downpour could dampen the night.

This event marks the beginning of our dedicated effort to foster a collaborative space where we can strengthen resources and support for those caring for loved ones with cancer. We’re thrilled to invite the community to join us in this mission by providing feedback and engaging in fundraising efforts. Together, we’re working to ensure that Georges River and Sutherland communities have access to world-class cancer services at St George and Sutherland Hospitals.

The impact of this gathering was reflected in the words of attendees:

“It was so brave of you to open your soul to us and share your story. I was beyond touched and feel seen.”

“Being a carer is so hard… It’s not a community you want to be part of, but if I have to be a part of it, I’m so glad to be here with someone like you.”

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us, making this evening a powerful start to building better support for carers in our community.
