The waiting is the hardest part. For cancer patients like Rosealeen, this is all too true. But a game-changing research grant could change that by making same-day radiation treatment for brain metastases a reality.
Rosealeen was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. At just 46, she learned the cancer had spread to her liver, and later, her brain. After brain surgery, she was referred to Dr Catherine Clark, Head of Radiation Oncology at St George Cancer Care Centre.
Dr Joel Poder received a 2024 SSMRF Medical Research Grant, sponsored by Southern Cancer Care (SCC), to explore how artificial intelligence can dramatically speed up the planning process whilst still ensuring precision care.
His research aims to validate AI tools that can assist in planning radiation treatment for multiple brain tumours safely in just hours, using a morning MRI to plan and then being able to deliver treatment that same afternoon.
Once validated, these tools will move to clinical trials, potentially transforming treatment timelines for patients with metastatic brain cancer.
Rosealeen, now in remission, says this breakthrough could be invaluable to patients, shaving a week-long wait down to just one day.
Southern Cancer Care proudly funds research in partnership with SSMRF. 100% of the research donations given to SCC are used to fund medical research across St George and Sutherland Hospitals.
